Constitution Day

Constitution Day was observed on December 5, 2017, by the Department of Political Science. Constitution day is observed every year on November 26. The resource person for the day was Chang Peer from the Indian Standards Institute, Benson town. The co-ordinator for the program was Prof Albert Smith.

The programme began with a prayer song from Ms. Reema and team of 1st EJP which was followed by a dance performance. Then there was a brief introduction about the Chief Guest. Moving forward, our principal Maxim Dias addressed the gathering and also gave a brief introduction about the Chief Guest. In his speech he spoke about Bharat Mata, being yourself, and our duties towards our motherland, giving examples from the scriptures.

Later, the Chief Guest, Mr Chang Peer, addressed the gathering. He spoke about the Constitutionalist and the Socialist, told us about the history of our Constitution, how it was framed and the main person involved in framing the Constitution, Dr. B.R Ambedkar. He explained about the SC and ST condition in India then and now, about how the rights and privileges given to them are misused. He quoted a famous saying of Dr. Rajendra Prasad: “The Constitution is like a machine which does not have life”; there is no point in having a constitution without following it. He explained in detail about the Preamble of the Constitution and gave us the meaning of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. Moving on, he informed us about women’s rights, crimes committed against women and the punishments, and also about dowry. He gave us an awareness of what is happening in India with detailed statistics.

The speech ended with a Question and Answer session with the students. Many students engaged in this session and got their doubts clarified. He ended by saying, “Each citizen of India must go through the Indian Constitution for the betterment of society and the individual”.

Finally, there was prize distribution for the winners of competitions conducted on account of Indian Constitution Day. The Chief Guest gave away the prizes. The program ended with the National Anthem and a vote of thanks by Fizal.
