On July 12, 2017, the Department of Business Administration organised a guest lecture on Goods & Service Tax at St. Joseph’s Evening College for UG students pursuing the Business Administration course. The lecture was conducted for both second-year and final-year students. The lecture was delivered by Dr. T R Dayalan, a visiting faculty at MBA twinning program, Pondicherry University, with over 35 years of experience in different verticals. He was introduced by Dr. Kanishka K, HOD, Department of Business Administration.
Dr. Dayalan began his lecture with an introduction to the meaning of Goods & Service Tax (GST) and the different taxation rules prior and post implementation of GST in India on 1st July, 2017. He told us that the core objective of GST was to create one country, one tax, and one market and that the two main elements of GST were State Government Tax & Central Government Tax. He also gave us insights into the advantages & disadvantages of GST in the context of the Indian market.
The session went on with Dr. Dayalan sharing with us conceptual knowledge on the various aspects which influenced taxation in India prior to the implementation of GST and then compared it to the present scenario of GST. He also presented the tax structure in India levied by both central & state governments.
He gave us an insight into the benefits of GST in various fields like Business & Industry, Manufacturers & Exporters, the Central & State Government, and also the Consumers. It helped us understand why we ought to accept it for a better living.
At a later stage of the session, he explained to us the various methods used in taxation, the proposed GST rate in India, products excluded from the GST, and global implementation and the history of GST in different countries with an example of France. At the very end of the session, he displayed the model of GST and concluded his presentation.
During the Question & Answer session, Dr. Dayalan cleared various doubts, and answered the questions and queries of the students. The questions asked by the students were:

• Why should we accept the benefits of GST where we are paying more tax in restaurants where there was no concept of tax before?
• What is the difference between VAT & Cascading?
• What is CGST & SGST?
• How would GST be administered in India?
• What is the ratio of CGST & SGST?
• What is Cross utilization?
• What is Dual GST?
• What is the benefit in exempting alcohol & tobacco products from GST?
• Why are alcohol & tobacco products exempted from GST?
The session was very useful for the students as it helped them expand their knowledge of the GST and understand how to make the best use of it. The session concluded with Shashidhar, a student of final year BBA, proposing the vote of thanks.
