II SEMESTER

History, society and Culture: Medieval period

OBJECTIVES
• To help the students to acquire knowledge about the social, economic and cultural aspects of India during the Medieval Period
• To provide foundation for the study of other branches of history
• To develop analytical and reasoning skills.

UNIT 1:
Introduction - Advent of Islam. The Delhi Sultanate: Foundation and Consolidation - The Slave Dynasty (Qutubud din Aibak, Iltutmish, Razia Sultan) Balban. The Khiljis - Ala ud din’s Policy of Expansion - Administration - Economic Reforms. Tughlaqs - Political and Economic Experiments of Mohammed bin Tughlaq - Economic Measures of Feroz Shah Tughlaq. Sultanate art and architecture (20 hours)
UNIT II:
The Mughals - Founding of Empire - Babur - Administration and Reforms of Shresha. Consolidation under Akbar - Akbar’s Rajput Policy and Religious Policy - Mughal Administration - Land Revenue Policy - Mansbadari System - Religious and Deccan Policy of Aurangzeb - Factors for the decline of Mughal Empire.(20 hours)

UNIT III:
Socio-economic and cultural contributions of the Mughals :Bhakti and Sufi Movements (Mira, Chaitanya, Kabir, Nanak, Ramananda, Ramdas, Moin-ud-din Chisti) art and architecture

UNIT IV:
Rise of Marathas - Shivaji – Administration.
