Karnataka – Society, Economy and Culture 14th - 20th C.


OBJECTIVES
• To help the students to acquire basic knowledge about social, economic and cultural aspects of the history of Karnataka
• To provide foundation for the study of other branches of history
• To develop analytical, reasoning and graphical presentation of skills.
UNIT I :
SOCIETY AND ECONOMY Vijayanagara - Society - Caste system - Status of Women - State Income - Trade Contacts - Guilds. Bahamanis & Adil Shahis: State Income - Trade contacts Nayakas of Keladi: Revenue Policy Tippu Sultan - Economic Innovations. (15 Hours)

UNIT II:
RELIGION AND LITERATURE Impact of Jainism Religious & Philosophical Movements - Advaita, Dwaita, Vishistadvaita. Virashaivism Haridasa Movement Sufism Christianity and its impact Classical literature - Pampa, Ponna & Ranna Renaissance in Kannada Literature - New Trends in 20th Kannada Literature - Kuvempu and Bendre. (20 Hours)

UNIT III:
ART & ARCHITECTURE Architecture - Chalukyas of Badami, Hoysalas of Dwarasamudra. Shahi styles (Gulbarga, Bidar and Bijapur). Vijayanagara Architecture. (15 Hours)

UNIT IV:
NATIONALISM & UNIFICATION Modern Karnataka: Freedom Movement Unification Movement A Brief Sketch - Sir M Visvesvaraya K C Reddy S. Nijalingappa Devaraj Urs Kengal Hanumanthaiah (20 Hours)
