The Department of humanities, St. Joseph’s Evening College (Autonomous) in collaboration with Energy and Wetlands Research Group, Indian Institute of Science (IISC) organised a one day national conference on the theme, ‘Contemplating Water: Survival, Security and Peace’ on March 7, 2020 at St. Joseph’s Boy’s High School.
The Keynote speaker was Dr. T.V Ramachandra, Professor, Indian Institute of Science and the guest of honour was the actor, filmmaker and environmentalist, Mr. Suresh Heblikar.S. Padma Shri Salumarada Thimmaka and her son and environmentalist, Mr. Umesh graced the occasion.
In his keynote address, Dr.T.V.Ramachandra spoke about water sustainability, food security and prosperity. He informed that Bangalore city has already lost 79% of water bodies. He urged rainwater harvesting, rejuvenation of lakes; creation of water bodies in each ward, creation of mini forests to solve water crisis. Mr. Suresh Heblikar, guest of honour, said that to save environment one should be conscious on what we do every day.
The conference included talks, panel discussions, and paper presentations. “Water is a source of life and we need to strive hard to safeguard it. Hence Department of Humanities organised this national conference on this source of life” of life,” said Mr. Prashanth Kumar, Co-ordinator of Humanities Department.
