The students and staff of St. Joseph’s Evening College (Autonomous), Bengaluru held a
candle light vigil on Monday, January 6, 2020 at the Quadrangle of the college to express
their solidarity towards JNU students who were attacked recently. The vigil service was
organised by the Students Council of SJEC along with AICUF.
The students who took part in the vigil also condemned the recent attacks on the fellow
students of JNU by masked goons. Abdul Adut, III BCA said, “Some Weeks ago we
witnessed brutality against the students of Jamia Millia Islamia, Aligarh Muslim University,
etc. It is of no surprise that we witnessed yesterday’s barbaric act against the students of JNU.
We strongly condemn all such acts.”
The other speakers while condemning such violent acts against the students, also expressed
their solidarity with the students of JNU with a strong statement, “we are with you.”
SJCC observes a silent protest on campus
A day after the Josephites of SJEC organised a candle light vigil at their campus, it was the
turn of their counter parts at St. Joseph’s College of Commerce, Bengaluru who organised the
same in their campus on Tuesday evening, January 7, 2020 at the entrance of the college, to
condemn the attacks against JNU, and to extend their solidarity and support to them. The
student council members of SJEC and others took part in the vigil.
Hundreds of students dressed in black gathered together to mark their protest against the JNU
attack. A statement by the SJCC said that the students and the youth were the future of
democracy and their voices must be heard and respected. The violence faced by students and
teachers on their own campus was unacceptable.
The students conveyed their message through banners and placards along with hundreds of
lighted candles. A large number of media personnel were also present.
