PAPER I-CHAUCER TO ROMANTICS



(60 HOURS)
UNIT I (10 HOURS)

A survey of History of English Literature (Chaucer to Romantics 1340-1850)
• Tudor England (1340-1600)
• The Renaissance and the Reformation
• Puritanism
• Restoration England
• The Effects of French Revolution in British Life
• The age of Romantics

Unit II (6 hours)
Literary forms and terms (Poetic devices and literary forms)
Poetic Devices-The sounds of words-Assonance and Consonance, form, Onomatopoeia, Repetition, Rhetorical questions, Settings and Rhyme (types of poems like odes, ballad, elegy etc)
Literary Devices- Allusions, Allegory, Antithesis, Archetype, Connotation, Denotation, Dramatic techniques, Euphemism, Hyperbole, Imagery, Irony, Metaphor, Motif, Oxymoron, paradox, Pathetic Fallacy, Personification, Pun, Satire, Simile, Symbolism, Tone.

Unit III (8 hours)
Prose
1. Francis Bacon: Of Studies
2. Charles Lamb: Old China

Unit IV (20hours)
Poetry
1. Philip Sydney: Virtue, let me have some rest (Sonnet 4)
2. John Milton: On His Blindness
3. William Blake: Lamb and the Tyger
4. William Wordsworth: Lines written in Early spring
5. John Keats: Ode to a Grecian Urn

Unit V (16 hours)
Drama
1. William Shakespeare: Macbeth ( The sleep walk scene-Act 5)
