After a disappointing 2020 where millions lost their life because of the Pandemic, the only hope for 2021 was that things should get better by a slight margin atleast. The Almighty answered our prayers as the first good news of 2021 was the discovery of the vaccine. The students of St Joseph Institution collaborated with the Government of Karnataka, Aarogya Seva and BBMP, and were instrumental in the Vaccine Drive. Six hospitals, namely, Victoria Hospital, CV Raman Hospital, BMCRI, K.C. General Hospital, UPHC, and Bowring and Lady Curzon Medical college and Research Institute were the centres in Bangalore where the vaccination took place. Being an institution which focuses not just on academic excellence, but also on character formation and service to the society, the students were encouraged to participate in the Vaccine Drive, and they did just that by being proactive.
To ensure things happen effectively, four teams were made with one Point of Contact in each group. The students had to visit the hospitals on 16th, 17th, and 18th of January, and the task was to assist the hospital staff by verifying the documents and ensuring social distance was practiced throughout. The frontline warriors were requested to sit in a room, and it was taken care such that not more than ten were inside the room at a given point of time. After the vaccination was done, they were asked to stay in an observation room for thirty minutes after which they were free to leave. It was a good feeling to see the frontline warriors getting vaccinated and the respect towards them increased manifold for having put the society ahead of themselves.
Overall, it was a great experience for the students. They grabbed the opportunity and did their best in volunteering. They showed that with unity comes strength, and together we can achieve anything, even if it means fighting a pandemic. “We thank and appreciate each student for their spirit of Volunteerism in the Historic Covid Vaccination Drive. Let’s continue to give our best to do something good for the society that we live in”, said Professor Ebenezer Sam, the teacher Co-ordinator for the Outreach Program. The students not only witnessed the vaccination process, but also went home with a sense of pride and satisfaction for having served the society wholeheartedly.
