SOCIAL EMPOWERMENT FOR WOMEN – “A WAY TO LEAD A HAPPY AND HONORABLE LIFE”

Women’s empowerment is very essential for the development of society. Empowerment means individuals acquiring the power to think and act freely, exercises choice and fulfill their potential as full and equal members of society. Hence, social empowerment is process of developing a sense of autonomy and self-confidence, and acting individually and collectively to change social relationships and the institutions and discourses that exclude socio-economically marginalized.

Understanding the relevance and need of women’s empowerment, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Forum of St. Joseph’s Evening College organised a special talk on Monday 20 November, 2017 on the theme “Social Empowerment" exclusively for Women Students belonging to scheduled caste and scheduled tribe. The programme was organised in collaboration with Respect for Life India, a non-profit and secular organization. Over 100 women students from BA, B.COM, BBA and BCA streams attended.

The programme began with the introductory and welcome speech rendered by Dr. Kanishka, the coordinator of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Forum. The resource person, Ms. Padma began the programme by emphasizing the relevance of Social Empowerment for women. Later, a documentary on social exploitation was screened, after which, issues and implications of the same was discussed and consensus was taken from the participants. The key takeaway from the programme was to be aware about the exploitation women encounter in day to day life. Most importantly, the resource person emphasized the need to be alert and prudent.
