Course: 60 hours (Compulsory Paper)

UNIT - 1 Introduction to Social Problems (15 hours)
Definition and nature of social problems – The relativity of social problems – The cultural base of social problems – Approaches to study of social Problems (religion, Law Journalism, Art & Sociological Approaches) (Merton& Nisbert)

UNIT - 2 Population Problems (15 hours)
a) World Population Crisis – Consequences of Population change in Agrarian and industrialized countries
b) Population problem in India: Causes of high fertility – Rural – Urban differences in fertility – Consequences of over population – Measures to meet the problem. (Merton& Nisbert, Ram Ahuja)

UNIT - 3 Alcoholism (10 hours)
The concept, Extent of Alchiholism , Process of becoming an Alcoholics, Causes of Alcohol Abuse, Problems of Alcoholism , Treatment of Alcoholics , Prohibition , Women and Anti-Liquor Movements , Control on Alcoholism (Ram Ahuja)

UNIT - 4 Drug Abuse and Drug Addiction: (15 hours)
Aberrant behaviors –Basic concepts – Nature and impact of abusable drugs-Motivations for drug usage – Theories of causation – Measures in combating Drug trafficking – treating addicts and preventing drug abuse – control over Abuse (Ram Ahuja)

UNIT - 5 The problem of Child Labor (10 hours)
Meaning & causes of child labour – Working conditions of Child labourers Government Measures and National Policy Amelioration

UNIT - 6 Problems of Urbanization (10 hours)
Concepts of Urban , Urbanisation and Urbanism – Social effects of Urbanisation – Problems of Urbanisation – Causes of urban problems – Prostitution -Solutions to Urban problems .(Ram Ahuja)
