Study tour to Mangalore

Students undertake educational visit to Mangaluru
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication organised a three-day field trip for final year BA Journalism and first-year MA, Journalism and Mass Communication students from January 18 to 20. This tour is part of the practical exposure enrichment programme conducted every year by the department to impart real-world experience and skills.

On day one of the programme, the students and teachers had an interactive session with the St. Aloysius College’s community radio initiative, ‘Radio Sarang 107.8’. Dr. (Fr.) Melwyn Pinto, the Director of the community radio and the department head of Mass communication department at St. Aloysius College organised a knowledge sharing session for the students on the importance of community radio and its vital role played in the community.

Ms. Mayola, the promotional executive of Radio Sarang provided a detailed presentation on the functioning of community radio, the nature of programmes, audience participation, and appreciation, among other aspects.

After the informative session, the MA Journalism and Mass Communication students recorded their radio drama at the Radio Sarang’s recording studio.

Followed by the recording session, Henry Pereira of the St. Aloysius College’s chapel gave a guided tour of the chapel which was built in 1885 by Rev Father Joseph Willy. The Chapel is a replica of world-renowned Sistine Chapel at Rome. Mr.Pereira gave a glimpse into the chapel’s long history, structure and artistic paintings. He also explained about the painting restoration works and cautioned how the mobile phone radiation, dust and sunlight can cause damage to the paintings. He also conducted a quick quiz programme on various aspects of Christianity. It was followed by a visit to the museum also housed within the college campus where the antiques of various kinds were at display. Some of the famous exhibits included the first ever computer in Mangalore and first generator and camera in Mangalore. After lunch, the team went to the Panambur beach for relaxation before finally settling in for the day.

The second day of the itinerary included a visit to the famous Malpe beach. The students had the experience of an enchanting ferry ride to the St. Mary’s Island. The students were mesmerised by the emerald sea of the Island. The trip was planned to infuse exposure on various aspects of the study of communication.

“The trip was fun and educating, and provided me real-time experience and exposure on various aspects of mass communication.” says Pavan Nadig, I MA Journalism and Mass Communication.

“It was a different experience to be together as a family away from the typical class structure. I have learnt how to anchor a radio programme and technical aspects behind it,” says Rakesh, I MA Journalism and Mass Communication.

Mass Communication students’ radio programme at Radio Sarang
The I MA Journalism and Mass Communication students conceived a radio programme on women empowerment which was recorded at the Radio Sarang, community radio at St Aloysius College, Mangalore.

The programme was tailored to the local community members to understand their rights. It will be broadcasted by Radio Sarang in Mangalore shortly.

Pavan Nadig, a I MA Journalism and Mass Communication student conceived the topic, prepared the script and also anchored along with Immanuel Rakesh and Ignatius Arun of the same batch.

“I was very much happy to host the programme there because, one thing is, I hosted the show in my mother tongue that is Kannada and I also came to know that Radio Sarang 107.8 is recognized as one of the best radio stations in India,” says Pavan.

“It’s a first-hand experience. During the recording session I was both excited and nervous.”, says Ignatius, one of the participants in the programme. “I gained practical skills during this radio recording program,” says Rakesh, another participant.

The programme is the first radio programme created by the department. This will be followed up with a series of podcasts later to be aired within SJEC. “The students did a great job at Radio Sarang. We are in the process of setting up a studio in our own college for recording and other purposes. We look forward to churning out more such creative pursuits,” says Ms.Indumathi. S, Assistant Professor, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication.
